Suzie Johnson is the dynamo behind the NZ brand ‘Oosh”. Rumor has it Suzie has undiagnosed A.D.D, as she is unstoppable!
Suzie, is a trained Nurse, Entrepreneur, Author, Clothing and Jewellery Designer, Retailer, Artist, Property Developer, motivational Speaker and Mother of 5 very busy kids.
Suzie began this journey only 8 years ago after putting her husband through a 4 year Degree by making Art and Jewellery. Initially selling it in her Shed, Markets and peoples homes all the while her twin boys were babies. Her hobby of manufacturing beaded Jewellery and Hand Painted Canvas Art turned into a saleable Retail brand – OOSH.
In 2007, Suzie and her husband Kiwi purchased and renovated a derelict building in Shannon and ‘Shanfransisco’ was born. Initially opening 4 days a week and juggling kids, Manufacturing and manning the Store. When the Store opened they only had $5.00 left in their bank account, and the mortgage was due. They had risked everything, IT HAD TOO WORK!
Gallery 57 sold Suzie’s art and Jewellery; it created a niche and shopping destination. Kiwi gave up his full time employment and worked more than full time in the business also. They brought and renovated the shop next door, naming it Oosh. It was the start of Suzie’s own clothing brand, designs made in NZ. Clothes that are trendy, funky, colorful, functional, and affordable.
In October 2010 the 4th shop ‘For Frocks Sake’ was brought and renovated. Another Clothing Store stocking imported hand picked edgy clothing. Suzie also worked with the council and campaigned to get hanging baskets and plantings to beautify the town.
During 2010, Suzie wrote a stand-up comedy show. A raw Un-P.C motivational Comedy Show. This has developed into a successful fundraising event. Its mission is to empower women; develop the tools to understand body shape, then how to dress it.
In September 2011, Suzie and Kiwi purchased a building in Woodville, fondly renaming the town ‘Holly Woodville’. Opening the same brand of shops and replicating the Shannon business model.
Suzie has written and self published “The Book”, a light hearted look at life, each page sharing a different message. Amazingly selling over 3000 copies to date in NZ.
A better supply line was needed so Oosh started a sewing factory to design and produce their own quality made clothing in Ahuriri Napier. An Oosh Retail Store was built on the front of it, selling the clothing as well as imported line. The Concept store ‘The Oosh Experience’ was started
With a stable supply line additional stores were sought and a further 3 store have been added. These include Cambridge, New Plymouth, and The Mount. The plan is to Oosh 20 towns in ten years; increase its Web presence and social media activity.
Suzie trusts her gut feeling and intuition when it comes to business. Suzie wants to Ooshify NZ one town at a time and believes ‘fortune favors the brave’. It takes hard work and long hours to succeed.
Suzie’s vision and goal is to have her own TV show eventually. ‘if you don’t have a goal, where do you kick your ball?’ Suzie believes be around positive people, then pay it forward, so watch this space you haven’t heard the last of this crazy lady yet!
